Limestone Coast Wineries
About four hours from Adelaide and halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne, Coonawarra wine region is most famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon. The red soils (known as terra rossa) sit atop deep limestone beds that produce outstanding wine grapes. Coonawarra has over 24 cellar doors and is known as ‘the Bordeaux of Australia’. The other official wine regions on the Limestone Coast are Mount Benson, Mount Gambier, Robe, Padthaway and Wrattonbully.
