Spend a day in Adelaide learning about Aboriginal Australian culture at the South Australian Museum and Tandanya and include an Aboriginal art tour in the itinerary. 

In the Flinders Ranges, visit traditionally significant sites that feature ancient paintings and engravings and listen to the stories of the Adnyamathanha people.

Permits - many Aboriginal communities or lands require entry permits which must be organised at least four weeks in advance. All visitors to APY Lands in the Outback must have a permit.

Day 1

Adelaide

Spend the day exploring the city – recommended Aboriginal experiences include: Tandanya – National Aboriginal Cultural Institute – for visual art, performances and a shop selling authentic arts and crafts. Take a guided tour of the South Australian Museum’s Aboriginal Cultures Gallery, featuring more than 3,000 indigenous Australian artefacts – guided tours available. Take a tour with Southern Cultural Immersion and learn about the history and importance of Adelaide and the plants in the Botanic Gardens to the Kaurna people.

Day 2

Adelaide - Fleurieu Peninsula

Travel south of Adelaide and through McLaren Vale to the Fleurieu Peninsula and meet with Mark Koolmatrie from Kool Tours. Mark is a Ngarrindjeri man and is your guide to the region offering multiple tours highlighting the connection of the Ngarrindjeri people to country. Mark also works in collaboration with Gemtree and Spirit Australia Cruises offering a cultural insight on their tours.

Day 3

Adelaide to Flinders Ranges

The Flinders Ranges region is the traditional home of many Aboriginal societies and offers visitors a great opportunity to learn about their culture. Tour operators travel to the Flinders Ranges and incorporate Aboriginal cultural experiences. The guides will share stories of the Adnyamathanha people at significant sites and introduce visitors to ancient paintings and engravings.

Day 4

Flinders Ranges

At Wilpena Pound Resort, each night guests will be welcomed to the area in Yura Ngawarla, the language of the Adnyamathanha people. Wilpena Pound Resort also offer a variety of cultural tours including access to the Sacred Canyon tour which is only accessible on an Adnyamathanha guided tour.

Visit Wadna Shop where you can view and purchase the works of local Adnyamathanha artists. You can also join one of the Wadna Cultural Tours where your guide can show you ancient petroglyphs, find bush tucker and medicinal plants and visit culturally significant sites.

Day 5

Flinders Ranges - Adelaide

Depart the Flinders Ranges and travel through Hawker and Quorn to Port Augusta. Port Augusta is the home to the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden and Wadlata Outback Centre, where visitors can learn more about the region and its history. Then return to Adelaide airport for your onward flight or continue to your next destination.
