Preserving the MacGillivray Post Office: A Journey Through Time
Emu Ridge, a family-owned establishment since 1991, is proud to preserve the history of the MacGillivray Post Office, located in the heart of Kangaroo Island. Situated between Kingscote, Parndana, and American River, Emu Ridge offers a glimpse into the past, celebrating South Australia's postal heritage.
The post office originally stood on the opposite side of the farm, owned by FH Faulding. After the property changed hands, including being divided among soldier settlers in the 1950s, the post office was relocated to the Burns family's new homestead in the late '50s. Despite facing closure in 1950, local residents ensured the post office continued until it closed officially in 1952.
In the 1960s, the post office was moved closer to the Burns’ homestead and eventually repurposed by Larry Turner, who grew yabbies before turning his focus to eucalyptus oil. The post office was then relocated to its current site, where it became the original shop for Emu Ridge.
Today, the MacGillivray Post Office stands as a museum showcasing the island’s postal history. Visitors can enjoy self-guided tours or opt for a personalized guided experience to explore this fascinating piece of Kangaroo Island’s past.
